As part of the Veterans Access Choice and Accountability Act of 2014, Congress appointed a group of VA and health care experts, who would be paid for by the VA, to review the structure of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and give recommendations on how best to fix it.
The commission finally finished its evaluation and made their recommendations public last Friday, and page 61 says it all:
"The Independent Assessment highlighted systemic, critical problems and confirmed the need for change that has been voiced by Veterans and their families, the American public, Congress, and VHA staff. Solving these problems will demand far-reaching and complex changes that, when taken together, amount to no less than a system-wide reworking of VHA."
This report is a defining moment in the fight for reform, because while many of the conclusions and subsequent recommendations in the report are ideas many of us are all familiar with, and for which we have advocated, this is the first time these sorts of suggestions have come from the "mouth" of the VA.
